My name is Rachel, and I like to cook and eat. I was born and raised in Toronto and learned to love food from my family, where life revolved around the dining table. Now based in Montréal, my cooking is guided by what looks good at the market, my crazy sweet tooth, and all the things I’ve learned from friends, family and the restaurants I’ve worked in. I like to think of myself as equal parts torontonian and montréalaise, hence the name.
ABOUT THE RECIPES
When I’m in the kitchen I like to go with my gut (literally and figuratively), and encourage you to do so too. Think of the recipes more as guidelines to inspire you instead of fixed.
OTHER THAN COOKING…
I’m always out and about in Montréal, usually in the sud-ouest where I live with my husband Max (he’s a photographer and nurse extraordinaire) and my cats Brioche and Pumpkin. I work in food security, but when I’m not at my day job you could probably find me: eating something good in the city, cooking, at the market, planning a party, or as a server in your neighbourhood restaurant.
SUSTAINABLE, RESPONSIBLE AND FAIR = DELICIOUS
Over the years, I’ve become convinced that food that is good for the earth, treats animals well, and is fair to people ends up being more enjoyable. Good ingredients also go a long way – just compare the first strawberries from Île d’Orléan to ones shipped from across the continent, or unbleached flour and natural cane sugar to their more processed counterparts. It may mean that I can’t make Max’s favourite chocolate cake as often since ingredients are more expensive (hello, Valrhona!), but it means that when I do we relish it all the more. I love talking about where to get good food in Montréal, and I’ll be sharing some of my favourite finds here and there.
Otherwise, thank you for stopping by. I hope this blog inspires you to make something delicious, to be enjoyed by yourself or to be shared with friends.
